What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
“It’s normal to leak a little bit as you get older or after having a baby.”
“Well of course your back hurts, you’re pregnant!”
“Sex may feel painful at times, but you will get used to it.”
Have you or someone you know been told something similar to this? Pelvic floor dysfunction is very common in men, women, and children. Sadly, some feel ashamed or embarrassed about their incontinence or pelvic pain and have not sought treatment for years.
Over the years, more research has been done in the growing field of Physical Therapy as it relates to pelvic floor dysfunction and how it can help a variety of symptoms. Pelvic floor PTs perform both external and internal assessments of the pelvic floor to address key muscle restrictions or imbalances which may have been overlooked in the past. Whether you have experienced pelvic dysfunction for 30 days or 30 years, pelvic PT may be just what you need. Below are a list of common diagnoses that are treated by pelvic floor physical therapists:
Women
Urinary and/or fecal incontinence Pelvic organ prolapse Constipation Dyspareunia (pain with penetration) Diastasis recti Pregnancy/postpartum related pain Painful bladder (Interstitial cystitis) Coccydynia (tailbone pain) Chronic pelvic pain |
Men
